On Monday, April 21st, the City of Columbia made public the official findings of a special census that was carried out inside the city borders. As of September 16th, 2024, the city of Columbia had 48,885 residents and 21,492 housing units, representing a 17.26% increase in population since the 2020 decennial census. Numerous state and federal funding plans distribute funds to communities according to population size. This covers financing for public safety, community development, housing aid, healthcare, and infrastructure projects (roads, bridges). A precise census count guarantees that Columbia gets a fair portion of these important resources. Mayor Chaz Molder stated the data is very beneficial and what will shape the future of Columbia. City Manager Tony Massey added the new population number represents a projected $6.4 million increase in state shared revenue to Columbia for over the next five years. To see the data and learn more details you can visit the city’s website at www.ColumbiaTn.gov by May 1st, 2025.
