Joining states throughout the country, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is urging drivers to slow down and move over for highway workers. In an effort to increase safety in Tennessee’s interstate and highway construction and maintenance work zones, TDOT will be promoting that message throughout the state during National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 21st-25th). “Respect the Zone, So We All Get Home” is this year’s theme. A total of 113 TDOT workers have been killed in work zones. The weather is ideal for highway construction in the spring and summer. Major highway widening projects, repaving, and litter collection are examples of work zones. Throughout the state, drivers will come across work zones. 16 people lost their lives in work zone crashes in Tennessee last year. There have been 35 instances this year where drivers have collided with TDOT vehicles and equipment, including HELP trucks. Our HELP patrols and other first responders help drivers in these secondary work zones. This Wednesday, April 23rd, is “Wear Orange Day” in support of National Work Zone Awareness. In 2024, a total of 2,318 crashed with 563 injuries were reported at work zones in Tennessee. Always be aware and move over!
