This April, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Literacy Program will officially accept new and gently used books from the Lawrenceburg Police Department as a drop-off facility for students in kindergarten through third grade. The most crucial time for a child’s reading development is during these formative years. The National Research Council states that a child’s chances of succeeding academically drastically decrease if they are not proficient readers by the end of the third grade. Students are four times more likely to drop out of high school if they are not proficient readers by the third grade. Reading is the cornerstone for all students’ futures, which is why it’s so crucial to get books into their hands today. Summer reading is a great way to exercise what students have learned throughout the year and to retain new information before starting a new school year. All donated books will go directly to local organizations in Lawrence County, such as A Kid’s Place, The Shelter, LawCo Kids, and more, to ensure that various numbers of children can receive these books. The drop-off location will be the Lawrenceburg Police Department for the entire month of April. Expected donations are new or gently used books with grade levels of kindergarten through third grade. You can make a difference in a child’s life, just one book at a time!
