To clean up a large illegal tire dump along the county line, Lawrence County Solid Waste is working with Wayne County and a private property owner. This farm was the site of an estimated 10,000 tire dumps. Lawrence County purchased the 320GC Caterpillar track hoe with a hydraulic thumb, which is essential to the project, with grant money from the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation’s Tire Environment Fund. To transfer it, the funding also included a truck and trailer. In order to pay for salary, benefits, equipment use, fuel expenditures, and tire disposal, the property owner deposited money with Lawrence County. The tires were separated into piles to ease the process of loading them into a dump truck to be transported to a Nashville facility, Liberty Tire Recycling.
