A Giles County High School Teacher is Arrested for Solicitation of a Minor

According to a release, the Giles County Sheriff’s Department made an arrest on Friday, February 24th. The suspect is Steven Hughes, a Giles County High School agricultural teacher. Hughes is charged with solicitation of a minor and was released from Giles County Jail on Saturday on a $5,000 bond. The Giles County Director of Schools, Vickie Beard, stated, “We were made aware of a situation Friday, and an investigation was immediately begun with the assistance of the Giles County Sheriff’s Department. Since this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment can be made at this time”. Hughes will appear for the charge in court on Tuesday, March 11th. Other students may have also suffered inappropriate contact with Mr. Hughes. If there are any other victims, or if anyone has concerns that their child may have been a victim, please contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Office at 931-363-3505. Sheriff Purvis wants to remind the public, “Everyone in Tennessee is a mandatory reporter under T.C.A. 37-1-403.” If you suspect child abuse or neglect, you are required by law to report it. Reporting can be done by contacting law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, or the Department of Children’s Services.
