Terry Joe “Jug” Oliver
September 3, 1958 – February 22, 2025
Terry faced his battle with cancer in the same fashion as he lived his life, with humility, kindness, and an opportunity to encourage someone else. Self-pity, bitterness, or doubt did not consume him even when the news wasn’t good or the treatments were harsh.
Terry was born in Cleveland Ohio to Leo and Doris Jean Oliver. He came into this world with a built-in best friend and brother, Tony (Brenda) Oliver. They were inseparable most of their lives playing on the same ball teams, sharing friends, and many days of sitting outside to talk as adults. After Terry’s father died, his family moved to Lexington AL and eventually added a stepfather Tony Gieske and a baby sister, Deanna Gieske Tidwell (Barry.) Lexington was much more than just an address of residence to Terry. It was a home that he took pride in and loved her people dearly. Terry graduated in the bicentennial Class of 76 at Lexington High School as a class favorite and multisport athlete. He continued his education at Calhoun Community College for trades in sheet metal and welding. He retired after a career in his profession. He was a member of Nebo Cumberland Presbyterian Church and previously served as the Associate Pastor as well as a Sunday School teacher. Terry never outgrew his love for sports. As an adult he played in softball leagues and became a distance runner. He won several 10K events but mostly enjoyed the nightly runs through his hometown with his running buddies. Always a Golden Bear fan, he coached youth league sports for several years. He kept up with high school, college, and professional sports long after his days of competing. His last sporting event was listening to his great nieces and the Lady Bears’ final game of the season.
In addition to Tony (Brenda) and Deanna (Barry), he will be missed by his nieces Morgan (Clay) White, Kristina (Nick) Willenberg, Annalee Jeffers, Anna (Chadwick) Tidwell, and nephews Mitchell (Abbey) Oliver, Andrew Jeffers, Blake (Emily) Tidwell. Great nieces and nephews are Olivia, Brenlee, Colton, Mason, Marilee, Anslee Drue, David Grey, and Beau Madilyn. He was blessed with a circle of friends that he loved like family as well. He had a special team of angels that God aligned so that Terry’s last days were of him being pampered like a king in his own home. Sha-Lynn, Erin, Judy, and Annalee stepped in for the worst days and made them better.
Terry’s family will be receiving his family and friends at Nebo Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Highway 101, Lexington Al on Thursday February 27 at 1:00 pm. Brother Ronnie Burgess will officiate his funeral at 3:00 and burial will follow at the church cemetery. Mitchell Oliver, Andrew Jeffers, Jacob Laurence, Randy Laurence, Butch Danley, and Wendell Hammond will serve Terry as pall bearers.
