We’re reminding Tennessee residents how to stay warm and safe during extremely cold weather as temperatures drop this week. This winter, households can use functional smoke alarms and adhere to some easy fire safety guidelines. Remind yourself to keep flammable objects, such as furniture, carpets, and blankets, at least three feet away from wood stoves and space heaters. Practice your family’s home fire escape plan. Everybody should be aware of two exits from every room. Always switch off portable heaters before leaving a room or turning in for the night. Never heat your house with an oven. Have chimneys and heating equipment inspected annually. Make sure portable heaters are spaced and away from anything flammable. Always unplug before leaving the house as well. Take action to prevent water pipes from freezing and know steps to take to unthaw them as well. Stay safe Tennessee!
