A smoke alarm alerted members of Lawrence County Fire & Rescue to smoke inside Gum Springs Baptist Church Thursday, allowing them to track down the source of the smoke and eliminate the threat before a fire ignited and damaged the structure. Thermal imaging allowed them to determine that a fan motor on an HVAC unit was malfunctioning. Power was cut to the unit and smoke ventilated from the building.
