According to The Tennessean, numerous excellent high school gymnasiums may be found in the Nashville region. Some have a reputation for being rowdy during TSSAA basketball games, while others are renowned for their customs and cutting-edge features. In three categories, the Tennessean ranked its top four gyms from: the greatest modern gyms, the best old-school gyms, and the best atmospheres. Local schools in the Lawrence County area have been named amongst these gymnasiums. Lawrence County High School is in the category of best atmosphere. Almost all of the Wildcats’ home basketball games are sold out. The size of the gym results from its initial use as an indoor swimming pool. School band members dress up and perform, and the student section contributes to making things tough for opposing teams. Loretto High School is in the category of best modern gymnasiums. After occupying its old location, known as “The Barn,” for 80 years, Loretto constructed a new facility, which debuted during the 2023–2024 season. Administrators had to create a plan and budget that would incorporate contemporary improvements while keeping some of the timeless elements that contributed to The Barn’s greatness. Among the school’s other championship trophies, the first item fans notice when they enter is Loretto’s 1958 TSSAA girls’ basketball championship title. Lastly, Summertown High School is in the category of best old-school gymnasiums. Aesthetically, Summertown is one of the state’s most recognizable gyms. With only 426 students enrolled, the gym is relatively small. However, during games, the dark, straight wooden bleachers are near the gym floor, giving the impression that spectators are hovering over the court. Beams that reach from one end of the court to the other, have been a staple since the beginning of the construction in 1953. Due to its limited space, Summertown’s famous gym is starting to get too big, and the school may eventually consider building a new one.
