American entrepreneurship is thriving, with tremendous growth and generational transitions opening up new opportunities. The Treasury Department announced that 430,000 new enterprises opened each month in 2024, a 50% increase from 2019. Remote employment, the gig economy, and artificial intelligence are driving this transition, resulting in entrepreneurial hotspots around the nation. Simplify LLC published its yearly analysis on the Best and Worst States for Entrepreneurs in 2025, citing the most recent statistics from the Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Tax Foundation, and United States Senate. The rankings were based on five important areas in all 50 states and the District of Columbia: corporation tax rate, inflation, consumer spending growth, job creation rate, and net migration of educated workers. Tennessee ranked No. 39 which is down 21 spots from 2024. Tennessee’s position slipped due to a considerable reduction in new business growth (from 14.4% to -10.8%, ranking No. 38) and reasonably consistent consumer spending (2% up from 1.6%, ranking No. 29). Worker mobility remained favorable, with a net movement of 8,693 educated adults (No. 9), though less than the previous year’s influx of 22,507. Furthermore, Tennessee experienced a significant regional inflation spike (22%, ranking No. 31), contributing to its drop in rank.
