On Wednesday, January 15th, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) opened the grant application process for the state’s Tire Environmental Act Program (TEAP). The funds are intended to support initiatives that develop or increase useful applications for used tires. These initiatives include recycling and processing tires, using tire-derived materials like aggregate, starting tire management research and development, using tires as alternative fuels, or encouraging infrastructure innovation. Approximately 6 million waste tires are produced annually in Tennessee. Since its launch, TEAP has assisted in the diversion of almost 7.6 million tires. The Tire Environmental Fund was created in 2015 by the Tennessee General Assembly. Nearly $10.8 million has since been given to grantees to address the state’s waste tire disposal problem. Applications for grants must be submitted by April 15th. The categories of qualified entities are unrestricted. The grant is available to all groups. More information about the program and the grants management system is online at the TEAP website.
