Richard Leroy Copper, Jr. Obituary
On February 13th, 1939, Richard Leroy Copper Jr. was born, and on January 25th, 2025 he departed from this world. He was born in McDonald, Kansas, but soon moved to Kiowa, Colorado, where he grew up. Often Richard would talk about his days working on his family’s farm while living in Colorado and the southern cooking his mom would make for him and his siblings. As he grew up, he had a love of sports. Particularly basketball and baseball, and he loved to watch football. Richard had a long and successful career as a draftsman, an architect without a degree. Though he did not have a university education, he did not lack anything, for he was truly gifted with a creative mind perfect for the job. He designed and built beautiful buildings and would often even fabricate additional touches to the houses he himself resided in. As mentioned, Richard was a creative soul. A side from the buildings he designed, his creativity also stretched into helping his family fix broken things or helping his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with art projects. Richard also had a career in ballroom dancing with his wife, Emily Copper. They competed in matching outfits that glimmed and glistened, often taking home trophies. When Richard and Emily moved to Lawrenceburg, TN, they gave ballroom lessons in their kitchen.
Richard was a structured man. He had a distinct routine that he always followed. From his morning routine to the flowers he grew each year. Everything worked like clockwork. Just how he liked it. Richard achieved any task at hand with a perfectionist mindset, making sure what needed to be done was accomplished and that it was done properly. Though these were the traits of his curious mind and work, Richard possessed the greatest whit. His jokes ranged from punch lines, traditional jokes, or smart comebacks. He rather liked to make a joke to get the curious reactions of his family members and would still laugh when they did not immediately get the punch line. If you did not get the joke at first, your ponderance did not make him shy away from what he loved to do: laugh. Richard was an observer and very opinionated. Depending on the day, you either distinctly knew because he vocalized them or sat with a smirk, knowing he knew something but was waiting for you to piece it together; he loved conversing.
Most of all, Richard was a servant; he loved so deeply. He would often tell you, “I love you,” but more than that, his actions of taking care of his family so well, tenderly, and admirably reflected his love. He left many memories that will be forever cherished by those who took the opportunity to love him. Often reminded of him by the smell of breakfast in the mornings and good food (he loved to cook), the TV show NCIS, tasteful art, comic strips in the newspaper, Christmas lights, sports games, early mornings, crossword puzzles, bright colored polos, a hearty belly chuckle, and so much more. In Richard’s passing, a void has taken place in the hearts of those who had the honor to truly know and love Richard. His love was distinctive and, in turn, made those who received his love a better human being. As his family mourns, they shall smile when they weep and feel loved when their hearts continue to break. Because, you see, that’s just the kind of person Richard was.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Copper, Sr. and Velma Freeland Copper; one daughter, Deborah Anne Lucero Baker; and four brothers, David Copper, Phillip Copper, Lloyd Copper, and Tony Copper.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Emily A. Copper of Lawrenceburg, TN; one daughter, Tonya Copper Davidson of Brighton, CO; three sons, Richard L.
