Due to a power issue that may cause cars to stop suddenly or not start, Ford Motor Company is recalling 272,827 Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickups. The issue, according to information from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration, is with a 12-volt battery manufactured by Camel Battery of China that has “internal manufacturing defects,” such as weld failures that may result in open circuits. It is stated from Ford, that no accidents, fires, or injuries resulting from the issue had been reported. Between February 2021 and October 2023, Ford produced the cars before discontinuing the use of those particular batteries. It is estimated that just 1% of the cars with the batteries have the flaws. Following U.S. government penalties for moving too slowly on an earlier recall, Ford promised in November to examine and improve its recall decision-making process and subject to monitoring by an impartial third party that will oversee its recall performance for three years. It is said from a previous recall on the vehicles, that some lost the ability to turn on hazard lights without warning. This involves software updates that detect battery problems to alert the driver.
