Mrs. Clara Simmons Harwell age 90, was born January 15, 1934 to the late Mack and
Nellie Buford Simmons in Lynnville, Tennessee, Giles County. She entered eternal rest on
January 9, 2025 at NHC in Pulaski, TN.
Clara’s early education began at Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church which at the time
was used as a one room school taught by Mrs. Claudia Woodson Martin.
Clara accepted Christ at an early age also at Mt. Olivet, the same place she attended
school.
On August 9, 1952, Clara was united in holy matrimony to Alex Harwell Sr. To this union,
three children were born, Clarie, Alex Jr. and Barry Earl.
Aside from her duties as a wife and mother, Clara worked outside the home as well.
During her early years she worked at the old hospital as a nurse then later with Dr. W.K.
Owen. To this day people still remember her from Dr. Owen’s office. After that career, she
worked at Maremont Gabriel where she retired after many years of service.
Clara was very active in the community and within her church. Clara was a member of the
Order of Eastern Star (OES) Chosen Friends Chapter Number 87 for over 47 years. She
served in various capacities over the course of those years such as Worthy Matron and
Secretary as well as Grand Marshall.
During her active years at Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church she was very supportive of the
Young People’s Department along with her husband. One of their main church events they
both took enormous pride in was the Annual Prayer Breakfast. In addition, she was a
faithful member of the church’s Ora Lee Fuqua’s Women Missionary Society, Lay
Organization, Sunday School, and Noonday Feast Community Bible Study to name a few.
Clara leaves to cherish her memories her devoted and loving husband, Alex Harwell Sr.;
daughter, Clarie Givens, son, Barry Earl Harwell and wife, Netra also known as Clara’s
daughter in love; grandchildren, Alex (Christina) Harwell III, Ronald Givens, Thomas
Harwell, Amber Givens and Rebekah Harwell and seven great-grandchildren as well as a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Public viewing for Mrs. Clara Simmons Harwell will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025
from 3pm until 6pm at Jordan Funeral Home 327 Mill Street, Pulaski, TN.
Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 beginning with visitation at 11am and
the 12noon service immediately following at Campbell Chapel AME Church 311 Mill
Street, Pulaski, TN.
Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Pulaski, TN.
Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Clara Simmons Harwell.
