Alton Redding Ledlow
September 22, 1936 – January 9, 2025

Alton Redding Ledlow passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2024, at the age of 88. Alton was born in Decatur, AL on September 22, 1936, one of eleven children born to Jake Leldon Ledlow and Roxie Gillespie Ledlow. Alton lived a Christian life rich in relationships and experiences.

Alton graduated from Lexington High School in 1956 and Florence State University (known today as University of North Alabama) in 1960. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He worked for the Lauderdale County Board of Education for 32 years. During these years, he taught in the classroom, served as guidance counselor, developed clubs and contributed to numerous sports programs at Brooks High School in Killen, AL. He touched the lives of over 3000 students during his career. He was key contributor to adding high school grades to the established elementary school and growing the education capacity in Lauderdale County. He was instrumental in establishing the first Brooks football team in the late 1960’s. He started many extracurricular clubs such as photography club and scholar club, which competed regionally in scholar bowls. These were examples of his lifetime commitment to help young people realize rich high school experiences.

Alton married Robbie Mae Johnson on July 3, 1969. Alton and Robbie engaged in numerous experiences including business initiatives, church functions, family travel, crop and livestock agricultural ventures. They were married 45 years when Robbie unexpectedly passed away in 2014. During these years, in addition to their jobs, they were a part of two businesses, farmed five different properties, participated weekly in First Baptist Church of Killen functions and traveled to 44 states.

In Robbie’s later years, Alton showed signs of dementia. In 2016, Alton moved from independent living at his home in Killen to memory care and eventually skilled nursing care. Although Alton was limited in communication capability during this period of his life, he continued to touch lives thru his warming personality. Alton developed many new friendships and was known as “papa” to the exceptional Huntsville Health and Rehabilitation team.

Alton is survived by his stepson Gregory Wade Jones of Harvest, Alabama.

Visitation for friends and family will take place on Thursday January 16, 2024, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Elkins East Chapel located at 7435 US 72, Killen AL. The funeral will follow at 1:30pm. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens in Florence, AL. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to First Baptist Killen at firstbaptistkillen.org or to Dementia Society of America at dementiasociety.org in memory of Alton.
