Chief Deputy Matt Tiller is now the leading office for Lewis County Sheriff’s Office after Dwayne Kilpatrick’s’ retirement at midnight on New Year’s Eve. According to state law, Chief Deputy Tiller is an Interim Sheriff, having complete control over the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department and jail. At their normal commission meeting on Monday, February 24th, 2025, at 6:00 PM, the Lewis County Commission will select a new sheriff. On Monday, March 17th, 2025, the designated person will take the oath of office as the official Lewis County Sheriff. They will then serve out the balance of Mr. Kilpatrick’s term, which expires on August 31st, 2026. Any qualified applicant interested in filling the position is required to deliver by mail or in person, a Sheriff’s qualification packet to the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. To be considered, all packets must be received by the end of the day on Friday, January 10th, 2025.
