The Removal of the Creek Indians will be the topic of a presentation by Dr. Christopher Haveman on Sunday, January 12th, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Florence Indian Mound Museum. Although most people are aware of the Cherokee “Trail of Tears,” fewer are aware that between 1827 and 1849, some 23,000 Creek Indians were also evicted from Alabama and Georgia and relocated to Indian territory west of the Mississippi River. In addition to discussing the Creeks’ experiences traveling over desert roads and along frozen rivers to modern-day Oklahoma, this session will explain how federal agents relocated the Creek people, including removing those who escaped to the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Seminole Nations. The Florence Indian Mound Museum at 1028 South Court Street, Florence, AL, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. You can contact 256-760-6427 for more information. This event is sponsored by the Alabama Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association and the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums and also is free.
