On Saturday, December 28th, around 11:15, Athens, Alabama was struck by an EF-1 Tornado with 100 miles per hour of peak winds. The tornado’s path traveled for 3.87 miles and had 160 yards in width. There were no injuries or fatalities. Pryor Street around the Veterans Museum, The Square & Pecan Park parking lot will remain closed until further notice. First responders and the community have gathered to help clean up the damage to the downtown area. Utility services have worked around the clock to get power up and running. There were approximately 2,500 outages around 3:00 AM on Sunday, December 29th. Keep businesses, homes, and downtown Athens in your thoughts and prayers during this time. For those impacted by the outages or needing assistance, officials advise contacting Athens Utilities or the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency for support and updates.
