County Executive David Morgan recently signed the paperwork that officially gave ownership of the former African-American school building in Lawrenceburg to the West Gaines Community Center. Lawrence County Commissioners voted to transfer ownership to the nonprofit organization during their September meeting. In November, they voted to donated $45,000 that had previously been budgeted for a new roof for the building, to the organization, as well. The school served first through eighth graders from 1937 until its closure in 1964.
