An incident involving fraud occurred over the weekend to a Lawrence County resident. The individual received an email stating someone purchased an item worth $1,000.00 from his typical bank account. Steps were then taken that were stated in the email to report that it was fraud.  The scammers had claimed to be employees from PayPal and that they had refunded $50,000.00 back into the account. The scammers then told the individual the refund was a mistake and was only supposed to be $500.00 and if not returned there would be a fine of $12,000.00. The individual then gave his account information to fix the apparent “mistake”. The victim did not realize this was a scam until checking the account and realizing the offenders stole $20,000.00. Action was taken to immediately close the bank account to secure the remaining money. The individual was advised to reach out to PayPal to be refunded the money. Be aware of incidents like these!
