Road construction in Tennessee won’t cause delays for Thanksgiving travelers this year. In preparation for increased traffic loads around the state, TDOT will stop all lane closure operations on state highways and interstates. Starting at noon on Wednesday, November 27, and ending at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024, all lane closures connected to construction will be halted. Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley stated that Thanksgiving is usually the most trafficked holiday of the year. “By halting road construction during this period, we can maximize the capacity of our roadways and reduce traffic, particularly on Wednesday and Sunday, which are expected to be the busiest travel days. Throughout the holiday weekend, TDOT’s HELP Truck drivers will be on duty to help with any potential occurrences along the interstates. Be mindful of them; slow down and move over. It’s required by law. Thanksgiving travel is expected to hit new records, according to AAA. There will be 1.8 million road trippers in Tennessee, up 27,000 from the previous year’s holiday. In certain construction zones, workers may be present even though all lane closure activities will cease. For the safety of drivers, some construction projects will also continue to have permanent lane closures. Especially in work zones, drivers are encouraged to drive carefully and to adhere to posted speeds. A $500 fine, court costs, and possibly higher insurance rates await drivers found guilty of speeding in areas where employees are present.
