On November 23rd, the first day of gun season, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) encourages hunters in Middle Tennessee to take part in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance activities. When a deer is harvested, hunters are urged to visit a TWRA sampling site so that agency staff can take lymph node samples from the deer’s neck for CWD testing. In order for TWRA to better manage and safeguard Tennessee’s deer population, this monitoring action aims to identify the onset of CWD in new locations. To help stop the disease’s spread, hunters in Lewis and Wayne counties—which are part of the CWD Management Zone—should be aware of the limitations on how they can transport deer that have been harvested. Visit TWRA website to see all locations and counties for deer inspections at www.tnwildlife.org
