At the Special Session meeting on October 21st, commissioners adopted resolutions that will reduce costs, improve cost equity, and set the county up for future economic expansion. A business has been hired by Lawrence County to load, transport, and dispose of our household waste at a Mississippi landfill for a period of five years after several months of work. The lowest bid, made by Waste Connections, Inc., was accepted. The contract also has a wonderful guarantee that caps annual raises at 5%. The county will still be paying less money than before this deal, even if those increases take place. Additionally, commissioners decided to raise the commercial solid waste tax at the same pace as the residential rate increase that was implemented towards the end of last year. This carries on with the goal to distribute the solid waste services’ costs as fairly as possible among all Lawrence County citizens. Additionally, they are aware of a very unjust situation: roughly 29% of people do not pay their solid waste fee. Commissioners are working to hire a far more aggressive bill collection firm to assist them in changing that.
