October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In October 1985, the event began as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). The American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries’ pharmaceutical division partnered to promote mammograms as the most effective breast cancer prevention measure. Over 360,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be reported in 2024. There is, still hope. The likelihood of survival continues to rise with improvements in early detection techniques and assistance. The 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99% when detected in its earliest, localized stages.
