At approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 16th, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies pulled over a car on Waterloo Road in Lawrence County. Jose Antonio Lopez Jr., one of the passengers, was seen inside the car. He is presently the subject of several arrest warrants. Shortly after stopping, Lopez seizes the wheel and strikes Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Klein, causing him to fall to the ground in a nearby ditch. Deputy Klein fired one shot at Lopez through the front windshield just before he was hit by the car. Lopez fled on foot after driving the car for about ¼ miles down Waterloo Road. To look for Lopez, ground crews, several drones, tracking dogs, and a helicopter were sent to the scene. After being transported by air to a Nashville medical facility, Deputy Klein’s condition is now reported as stable. Lopez was discovered hiding in a nearby barn and shortly after deputies swiftly surrounded the area on Adams Road. After being taken into custody, Lopez was taken to Southern Tennessee Regional Hospital, where he is presently receiving treatment for a shoulder gunshot wound. Lopez will be charged with several felonies and put into the Lawrence County Jail after being discharged from the hospital.
