Tuscumbia Police Officer Charged with Manslaughter

After admitting guilt to manslaughter in the 2022 death of a pedestrian struck by a police cruiser the officer was operating while intoxicated, a former Tuscumbia police officer was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday. Jay Steward received the punishment in the October 10th, 2022, killing of Terry Hinton, who was struck and killed while he was checking his mailbox. On August 13th, Steward entered a guilty plea to manslaughter in the case after being previously charged with reckless murder. When Steward drove the police car while not on duty, he was traveling at about ninety miles per hour.
