Burn Ban Issued In Wake of Weekend Wildfires

In the wake of a large wildfire in northern Lawrence County, Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Jay Moore has announced that a burn ban is now in effect inside the City of Lawrenceburg. Drought Monitor indicates that the area is in the midst of a severe drought, therefore no burning will be allowed, and no burn permits will be issued, until further notice.  

Over 100 firefighters and personnel from multiple agencies responded to the wildfire around 3:20 Friday afternoon after an initial report of a brush fire near Stephenson and Old North Military Roads.  Winds of up to 26 miles per hour, coupled with dry conditions, drove the fire to consume some 300 acres in a cornfield. The fire threatened several structures and residents were asked to evacuate the area.  Firefighters and the forestry service brought the flames under control by around 6:00 p.m.  No injuries or damage to permanent structures was reported.

Multiple agencies were again dispatched midday Saturday to the vicinity of Bennett and Denson Roads near the Henryville community to battle a brush fire that spread into a wooded area.  Units were able to quickly contain that blaze.

Residents are urged to refrain from all burning activities until such time that conditions are deemed safe.
