THE FLORENCE POLICE WERE OUT AT MCFARLAND PARK ON SUNDAY URGING PEOPLE TO STAY OUT OF THE WATER AND OFF THE BEACH UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AFTER A TUGBOAT SANK IN THE TENNESSEE RIVER SUNDAY MORNING. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 10 AM IN THE PORT OF FLORENCE NEAR O’NEAL BRIDGE. APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 5 THOUSAND GALLONS OF DIESEL SPILLED INTO THE WATER AND SOME FUEL WASHED UP ON THE BEACHES AT THE PARK. THE TIMES DAILY REPORTS THAT ACCORDING TO EMA BOOM MATERIAL WAS PLACED AROUND WHERE THE BOARD SNAK IN AN ATTEMPT TO HARNESS THE FUEL. THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT, FLORENCE PARKS AND REC, FLORENCE FIRE AND RESCUE, FLORENCE POLICE AND MARINE POLICE ALONG WITH THE ALABAMA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY RESPONDED.
