A BILL THAT WOULD ENHANCE PROTECTIONS FOR THE DUCK RIVER IN MAURY COUNTY IS DUE TO BE HEARD BY A SUBCOMMITTEE AT THE STATE CAPITOL THIS WEEK. THE BILL WOULD EXPAND THE AREA COVERED BY THE RIVER’S SCENIC STATUS. THE DUCK RIVER IS CURRENTLY DESIGNATED AS SCENIC BETWEEN IRON BRIDGE ROAD AND THE MARSHALL COUNTY LINE. THE BILL BEING CONSIDERED WOULD EXPAND THE DESIGNATION, COVERING THE AREA FROM INDUSTRIAL PARK ROAD IN COLUMBIA TO THE HICKMAN COUNTY LINE. THE BILL, WHICH IS BEING SPONSORED BY STATE REPRESENTATIVE SCOTT CEPICKY AND STATE SENATOR JOEY HENSLEY, IS DUE TO BE HEARD TUESDAY BY THE HOUSE AGRICULTURE AND NATUAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE. THE DUCK RIVER IS NOT ONLY A MAJOR SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER AND A POPULAR RECREATION SPOT, IT ALSO CARRIES THE TITLE OF THE MOST BIODIVERSE FRESHWATER RIVER IN NORTH AMERICA.
