A LITTLE MORE THAN TWO YEARS AFTER BREAKING GROUND FOR THE NEW ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL, OFFICIALS ADVISE THE BUILDING IS READY TO OPEN NOVEMBER 19TH. ACCORDING TO MEDIA SOURCES, THE ORIGINALLY OPENING DATE WAS SCHEDULED FOR LATE AUGUST BUT DUE TO WEATHER RELATED ISSUES, THAT DATE WAS PUSHED BACK. THE OPENING OF THE 57 MILLION DOLLAR, 285 THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT FACILITY IS THE LATEST CHANGE THE DISTRICT HAS SEEN THIS YEAR, OTHER CHANGES INCLUDE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ACADEMIES AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SIXTH GRADE AND NINTH GRADE ACADEMIES AND THE MOVING OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL INTO THE FORMER HIGH SCHOOL.  TEACHERS WILL BEGIN MOVING IN THE 15TH AND 16TH AND WILL MEET WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS ON THE 18TH. WHILE THE SCHOOL WILL BE READY TO BEGIN TEACHING ON THE 19TH, THE AUDITORIUM AND THE GYMNASIUM REMAIN INCOMPLETE AND WILL BE CLOSED OFF UNTIL FINISHED. AN OFFICIAL RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY WILL BE SCHEDULED AS SOON AS THE ENTIRE SCHOOL IS FINISHED WITH AN ANTICIPATED DATE OF LATE JANUARY.
