A settle agreement shows a former Maury County student kidnapped by her former teacher has settled claims against the school district for $650,000.
The former Culleoka Unit School Elizabeth Thomas, now 18 years old, was kidnapped by former health teacher Tad Cummins on March 13, 2017. The episode triggered an AMBER Alert and 38-day manhunt for Cummins, who was found with the then-15-year-old near a commune in northern California.
The victim's family said Cummins “groomed” her for months. They filed a federal lawsuit on her behalf against the Maury County School district. The action alleged teachers and administrators knew about a relationship between the two before Cummins was fired and before their disappearance.
The settlement agreement states the purpose of this agreement is to settle completely and release Maury County Board of Education from any liability regarding each and every claim that the victim has, or may have, in the lawsuit, including those arising out of or related to the lawsuit.
