With nearly 900 measles cases, according to figures posted Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people , doctors, and states are taking note.
The vast majority of the measles cases, 646, are in Texas, where an outbreak in the western part of the state that’s approaching the three-month mark.
Other states with active outbreaks, defined as three or more cases, include Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000.
How many cases are there in Tennessee? Tennessee has six measles cases as of last Thursday. Health department authorities said all cases are the middle part of the state, and that at least three of these cases are linked to each other.
There have been 884 cases in the United States in 2025 as of Friday, according to the CDC.
