Last week on Wednesday, April 16th, the Historic Crockett Theater hosted the State of the County event to inform the public of what is to come and what is currently happening in Lawrence County. Speaker, County Executive, David Morgan discussed the continuous growth Lawrence County has made over the past few years and currently. For 2024-2025, Lawrence County government has prioritized critical services and invest in projects that will long-term benefit the community. For the Sheriff’s Department, Jail, and Emergency Medical Services wages are now raised to a more competitive level to reduce high turnover rates and employment recruitment issues. A huge improvement was made for emergency services by adding a fifth ambulance and a new 24-hour crew. More support was given to the twelve volunteer fire departments due to the loss of many volunteers because of constant fundraising demands. The first Convenience Center for Lawrence County is underway in Loretto where residents will be able to dispose of trash, recyclables, and other items. Currently, a garbage truck is located at the North, South, East, and West areas once a week. This center will offer permanent options for trash disposal. Lawrence County Commissioners gave a $1 million loan to the airport for construction in order to expand and update. Several other items discussed were the 150-acre property east of Highway 43 is now a one of the two new Select Tennessee Certified Sites. This allows for more industries to make their way into Lawrence County. A $100,000 donation was made to the City of Loretto to expand sewer services to the industrial park to make property more marketable. State and federal grants totaling to $5.7 million were provided to begin the new Health Department for Lawrence County which is anticipated to be completed by June 2026. Lastly, by increasing fund balance and healthy revenues allowed the county to spend funds without a tax increase. At an exceptional standpoint, $20.8 million was able to be borrowed for future projects. These include the first major road repair in 26 years, $12 million for future school building expansions, and convivence centers. Lawrence County is constantly growing in population, industries, jobs, and more!
