In an update to a story from over the weekend…
The Giles County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Director of Schools Dr. Vickie Beard concerning suspicious activity uncovered by her staff. This information led to the arrest of Steven Michael Hughes late Friday night for the charge of Solicitation of a Minor.
Other students may have also suffered inappropriate contact with Mr. Hughes. If there are any other victims, or if anyone has concerns that their child may have been a victim, please contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Office at 931-363-3505.
Sheriff Purvis is thankful for the relationships held with other agencies as this arrest is an example of the school system and the Sheriff’s Office working together to ensure the safety of Giles County children.
It is also important to note, that without brave students coming forward, this activity may have continued.
Sheriff Purvis also wants to remind the public, “Everyone in Tennessee is a mandatory reporter under T.C.A. 37-1-403.” If you suspect child abuse or neglect, you are required by law to report it.
Reporting can be done by contacting law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, or the Department of Children’s Services.
