A distemper outbreak at a Memphis animal shelter has animal advocates urging the community to take precautions to ensure the health and safety of your pets. The outbreak resulted in the shelter having to euthanize nearly 100 healthy animals. Distemper is preventable by having pets vaccinated. To protect your pets, animal advocates recommend that you: Ensure that your pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date; stay alert to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge, coughing and lethargy; consult your veterinarian immediately; and limit your pet’s interactions with unfamiliar animals, such as at dog parks.
