At the request of Florence Police Chief Mike Holt, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on Thursday, January 15th, 2025. The deceased has been identified as Florence, Alabama resident Jackson Paul Jones, age 33. Jones called 911 at around 5:30 PM on January 15th claiming to be at the Florence Police Department parking lot and quote “about to shoot the place up.” Officers arrived at the police department’s back parking lot and found Jones getting out of a car while brandishing a firearm. One of the responding policemen shot back at Jones after he started firing. Jones was given life-saving treatment by officers and attended fire and emergency medical services, but he was declared dead at the site. The incident did not result in any cops being hurt. Investigators from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office are currently working on a comprehensive investigation. Evidence gathered from Jones’s car were a cell phone, and a firearm. The remains of Jones have been forwarded to state forensics for toxicological and autopsy examinations. Discoveries made during the investigation will be presented to a Lauderdale County Grand Jury at a later date.
