Howard Lane Goode, age 92, of Lawrenceburg, passed away Monday, January 13, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Rogersville, AL to the late Ruel and Cora Johns Goode. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Naola “Nell” Maureen McCormick Goode, and brothers, Fred Goode, Joseph Goode, Sr., and James Goode. He is survived by his son, Michael Goode (and Karen) of Loretto, and daughters, Deborah McEwen (and Larry) of Knoxville, Melinda Miller (and Rick) of Culleoka, and Sandra Lynch (and Tim Zuelke) of Florence, AL. He had 11 grandchildren: Isaac Goode, John Goode, Derek McEwen (and Nanako), Jessica Scarbrough (and Vaughn), Leah Bodenhamer (and Robert), Chase Gifford, Chelsea Gifford (and Zack Morrow), Cody Miller, Jessie Stein (and Jon), Amber Wammack (and Tyler Preston), and Sydney Callahan; and 12 great-grandchildren, Yuki and Kotoko McEwen; Ezri, Phoenix, and Soleia Scarbrough; Charlotte Gifford; Jaston and Oakley Morrow; Parker Miller; Tucker, Chesney, and Laikyn Stein.
He spent his childhood in Summertown/Crestview. He graduated from Summertown High School and later completed a degree in Business Administration at Mississippi College. As a young man he became a pilot and worked as a crop duster across Texas, Kansas, and Colorado, which began his life-long love of the American West. He went on to work for the FAA as an air traffic controller and instructor in air traffic control in Oklahoma City, as an air traffic controller in Jackson, Mississippi, and as Assistant Chief of the airport in Fort Myers, Florida. After retiring from the FAA, he returned to Lawrence County where he served as General Manager of The Advocate newspaper for several years. He enjoyed painting, told great stories about his life to his children and grandchildren, and was the author of two books, From the Ashes of Glory and The Devil’s Due: Redemption. Mr. Goode served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday, January 17, 2025, at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 1:00 PM Friday, January 17, 2025, with Larry McEwen and Michael Goode officiating. Interment will follow at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg, TN, with full military honors. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Condolences may be sent by way of our website at www.nealfuneralhome.net.
