To make the most of your heating sources in frigid temperatures, officials with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency recommend that everyone insulate your home as much as possible. Install weather stripping around doors and windowsills, and if necessary, cover them with plastic from the inside. If your home is not warm enough, try shutting off unused areas and confining your heat to a smaller area. Adding rugs on the floor and additional coverings over windows and doors can help, as well. Cover any cracks or gaps in areas that allow heat to escape or cold to enter. Also, learn how to shut off water valves in case of a burst pipe.
