New Tennessee legislation will take effect at the start of 2025. Some of the laws passed by the General Assembly during the most recent legislative session took effect on January 1st, 2025. Senator Page Walley, a Republican from Savannah, battled for land protection from adversarial foreign countries in Tennessee. Keeping foreign advertisers away from Tennessee property further prevented hostile foreign countries from purchasing land in Tennessee. Under this statute, unless specific requirements are fulfilled, foreign parties designated by the federal government are not allowed to buy or purchase property in the state. A similar law that was passed last year is strengthened by the current law, which has more stringent reporting obligations and protections. According to the bill, any company or forbidden foreign entity that already holds land in the state would have to sell it within two years. Additionally, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture would establish the Office of Agriculture Intelligence to gather and examine data pertaining to the illegal sale or holding of agricultural land throughout the state.
