An ailment that we could do without has moved into the Tennessee Valley.
Pertussis, or whooping cough cases continue to climb in Alabama. There are almost 200 cases across the state to date, and more than 50 of those are in the Tennessee Valley.
At least one case has been confirmed locally in Elkmont Elementary, Creekside Elementary, and one in Ardmore High School.
According to authorities with the Alabama Department of Public Health expectant mothers should be mindful of the infectious disease. Women who are pregnant and are due to give birth soon can give the illness to their baby shortly after they are born, and the illness can be deadly for infants.
Everyone is reminded to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing and to get vaccinated if you feel any symptoms.
The goal right now is to stop the spread to those who are immune compromised. As for otherwise healthy people whooping cough is just a long nagging illness.
