James Robert Leiter, age 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 8, 2024, at Waynesboro Rehab and Nursing Home after an extended illness. Jim was born to Harvey and Mary Baldwin Leiter on April 23, 1939, in Remus, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters: Richard, Betty, Jean, Dale, and Keith; grandson, Samuel; and best friend, Jerry Covert.
He is survived by wife, Janet of Summertown, Tennessee; son, David (Sherri) of Summertown, Tennessee; daughter, Suzanne Leiter of Davison, Michigan; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; his fishing son, Mingo Forbes (Tonya); and many loving cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Jim served our country for 5 years in the army having a 16-month tour in Okinawa and Thailand. He was a paratrooper and sharp shooter and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. His last assignment was at the US Military Academy, West Point, NY where he served as a stenographer.
After leaving the service, he was employed by General Motors as a Health and Safety Director in Michigan. Upon retiring in June 1992, he and Janet, wife of 64 years, traveled south in the winter and spent summers on a lake in Michigan. This was their ultimate desire for retirement and they were blessed with many years of travel and especially blessed with numerous friends.
Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a very gifted musician, playing the fiddle, guitar and mandolin. He passed that love onto his son and grandchildren. He loved wood carving, fly tying, reading and watching his favorite westerns.
Jim had a twinkle in his eye, ready to tell something funny or tease. He will be greatly missed but he made Jesus his Savior, so those who know Jesus will see him again!
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. A memorial service will be held at His House Ministries, 4909 Hwy 43 N., Summertown, TN on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 3:00 PM. The family suggests memorials be made to His House Ministries.
