Local officials are warning Lawrence County residents about fire hazards associated with ongoing drought conditions. According to Lawrenceburg/Lawrence County EMA Director Shelton Barnett, several brush fires have occurred in recent days including a large fire near Summertown that burned approximately 300 acres. He cautions that windy and dry conditions can allow an ember from a campfire or spark from a piece of farming equipment to ignite a wildfire in surrounding brush. Residents are urged to follow good fire safety practices including:
Limit outdoor burning, especially near dead brush or grass.
Do not leave campfires unattended and make sure they are completely out before leaving.
Dispose of cigarettes properly, do not throw into grass.
Do not drag chains or other materials that may cause sparks behind moving vehicles.
And
Call 911 immediately if a fire gets started in an empty field or grass area.
