LAWRENCE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM DIRECTOR MICHAEL ADKINS ADDRESSED THE LAWRENCEBURG ROTARY CLUB ON FEBRUARY 3. ADKINS BECAME DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS IN JUNE 2020 AFTER SERVING AS LAWRENCE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THE SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS AN ENROLLMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 6,900 STUDENTS (INCLUDING PRE-K) AND EMPLOYS 1200 TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND STAFF. THE SYSTEM HAS A 97.3% GRADUATION RATE AND A TEACHER RETENTION RATE OF 94.6%. ADKINS DISCUSSED CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS BEING MADE AT THE COUNTY’S SCHOOLS AS WELL AS AN OVERVIEW INITIATIVES SUCH AS STEAM DESIGNATION FOR ETHRIDGE ELEMENTARY, A SCIENCE LAB AT SUMMERTOWN, ROBOTICS COURSES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY, REST ROOM UPGRADES, GYMNASIUM RENOVATIONS AT E.O. COFFMAN MIDDLE, SUMMERTOWN, LORETTO HIGH SCHOOLS AND SEVERAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. HE ALSO DISCUSSED THE HIRING OF SCHOOL-BASED THERAPISTS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PIONEER VIRTUAL ACADEMY WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE STATE.
